Hotlinking, which is oftentimes called bandwidth theft too, describes linking to images which are on another site. Basically, if you have an Internet site with some images on it, some other person could also create a site and rather than using their own images, they could put links directly to your images. Even though this might not be such a big problem if you have a small personal website, it'll be something quite serious if the images are copyrighted, since somebody might be attempting to copy your site and trick people. If your hosting package deal has a limited monthly bandwidth quota, you can use up all your resources without getting actual website visitors, simply because the traffic shall be consumed by the other site. This is the reason why you should think about shielding your content from being hotlinked - not simply images, but also files, as in rare occasions other sorts of files are linked too.
Hotlinking Protection in Hosting
You can easily secure your content if you create an .htaccess file within the website’s root folder, but if you do not have previous experience, you should use our hotlink protection tool. The latter is included with all hosting
plans we offer and can be accessed through the in-house built Hepsia Control Panel. The protection may be turned on in two simple steps - pick the domain or subdomain for the site in question, then choose if our system should create the .htaccess file within the main folder or in a subfolder and you'll be good to go. You do not need any programming skills or any experience with this sort of matters, as there shall be nothing else to do. If you want to disable the protection eventually, you could see all of the Internet sites that are protected within the same section of the CP with a Delete button alongside each of them.
Hotlinking Protection in Semi-dedicated Hosting
If you don't want others to use your images on their Internet sites without your consent, you can easily activate the hotlink protection feature, that is provided with all semi-dedicated server
plans. Rather than generating an .htaccess file by hand inside the site folder and writing some code within it, which is the standard approach to deny direct linking to files, you can use a really simple tool, that we have integrated into the Hepsia CP. With it, you'll simply need to choose the site which should be protected and our system will do the rest. Moreover, you can choose whether the .htaccess file will be created directly inside the root folder or within a subfolder, when you'd like to activate the hotlink security function only for some content and not for the whole website. Stopping it is just as fast - you'll only have to mark the checkbox next to the particular Internet site and to click on the Delete button.
